Customized Professional Learning

Building content knowledge alongside best instructional practices for individual teachers, teams, staffs, administrations, and districts.

Save the cookie cutter presentations for the ‘olden days’ when we subconsciously thought, ‘You get what you get and don’t throw a fit!”  When we know better, we do better.  Just as we adjust to meet the needs of our students, I believe in adjusting to meet the needs of each staff. Choose from one of the topics below, or choose a topic of your choice, but either way, I will work with you to ensure you get the training you need!  Learning is not one size fits all.

Up to 7 hours of customized professional development for groups up to 40 participants.  These courses are designed to meet your individual district, school, or team learning goals.  Offered as overview training in 2-3 hour sessions, although most impactful as either full day sessions or multiple sessions over several visits. The best model incorporates these learning courses into full learning cycles (PD, modeling, coaching, repeat).  Learn the Math

Whether focused on specific standard domains across the grades K-6, or at a specific grade, we will dive into the math, the learning progressions, building concepts with concrete-representational- abstract  procedures.

Math Talk: Who's Doing the Most Talking?

Let's explore Math Talk through the lens of Community, Quantity, and Quality. We'll cover norms, sentence frames,  ways to hold all students accountable and more. This is a critical component of any math lesson. Our goal is students are doing 70% of the talking in our math classrooms. Our goal is to hear every voice, every day. You'll leave this workshop inspired and with the tools you need to get kids talking!

Yo! I'll Solve it! Problem Solving Beyond Key Words

Problem solving doesn't have to be the worst part of our math block. Understanding the situations and 8 problem types with the corresponding math models will revolutionize how you teach problem solving in EVERY GRADE.

Who's Doing the Thinking?

Using an inquiry based approach can help reengage students, provide access to all levels of learners , and put the teacher in a facilitator role. In this workshop we will explore how to launch lessons, sequence and select student work, and how to anchor the learning.  This is also a 6 week ecourse offered two times a year here.

Efficiency, Effectiveness, and Flexibility : Keys to Building Mathematical Fluency

Why don't kids have math fact fluency? In this workshop we'll explore the best instructional strategies, the progression of fact fluency, and how to build fluency that sticks.

Routines Matter

In this workshop, we wil focus on how math routines build mathematical fluency, language, and number sense. Quick Practices and daily routines are the base, how do we build from there?

Shannon is a phenomenal person with unparalleled knowledge of math!  She gently showed me how I was doing too much of the thinking for my students. I was able to use her methods to let my students learn how to struggle on their own and therefore grow their brains and confidence in their own math skills.  I can’t say it wasn’t difficult for them, but with time and patience, they were able to learn new strategies.  Shannon is an excellent teacher and has a fantastic personality. You can count on Shannon to be motivating, encouraging, and honest!

Expert Demonstration Lessons

Seeing is believing. Through the modeling of best instructional strategies, expert classroom management and through the fostering of an equitable math talk community, demonstration lessons allow teachers to get a sense of pacing, lesson design, and pedagogy in an inquiry-based classroom.  These are teacher favorites!  They are practical and give instant ideas to try on right away.

"After using the program for three years, it was so nice to see a lesson taught utilizing the parts of the program that we should all be using. Seeing it firsthand versus just being told was extremely effective. I not only enjoyed the math lesson itself, but also the behavior management strategies to make sure ALL students are engaged."

Students need structures and rehearsal to be proficient with turn and talks.  Do you struggle with dominators in your turn and talks?  Do students just stare at one another?  Do you have a hard time getting students on task, or to stop talking, or to regain control after a turn and talk?  How do you even choose partners and how often do they need to be changed?  All of these questions and more are taught in this mini course to get you started.  The course includes a step by step workbook, videos, and activities.   This course is available for individual teachers or for staffs.  The staff package includes facilitation guides for whomever is facilitating the learning with staff.
